About the Author
I'm Larry Zafran, and I am aware that biographies are typically written in the third person. I was born in 1972 in Queens, NY. I lived in Queens until age 30, lived briefly in South Florida, and have been living in Cary, NC (near Raleigh) since 2005. My career experience includes doing computer technical support and training for various large companies, as well as teaching and tutoring math to children in grades 3 to 12 as well as adults.
I am currently self-employed as an independent investor and writer. I am the author of numerous self-published books on topics including math, weight loss, and America's education crisis. I've also designed a homeschool journal as well as a practice journal for music students. My books are available for sale exclusively on Amazon.com, and can be read for free in their entirety on Google Books as public service for those who cannot afford to purchase them.
I am non-religious, and always have been. As a child, my family informed me that I am a (nice) Jewish boy, but most non-Jewish people know more about Judaism than I do. When asked what my religion is, I usually answer with, “Atheist,” “Secular humanist,” or “Spiritual but not religious.” Sometimes I just say, “None,” which usually has to be repeated several times while the questioner confirms that s/he didn't mishear me. I am interested in Eastern religions such as Buddhism, and enjoy reading about such religions, but I do not formally practice any. I have experienced first-hand the many benefits of meditation, and I believe in karma in the sense that we (individuals as well as cities, states, and nations) reap what we sow.
I am a full-time independent music student studying piano, guitar, percussion, and voice. I am the co-founder and co-president of a volunteer, not-for-profit, secular choir that performs free concerts at retirement homes and other community venues that serve people in need. I am also the founder and leader of a group that plays strategy board games, as well as a group that hosts potluck and music house parties. I live with my fiancée and not enough cats to fill a jury box.
